Ajax Turns from Traffic Calming to ASE

Mayor Shaun Collier tells Global Traffic Matters that Ajax is moving from its costly traffic calming measures to more successful photo radar enforcement.

“We had allocated $100,000/year for traffic calming measures and then developed warrants to identify the highest priority areas and the correct measures to address. While these were somewhat effective, many of these measures needed to be removed seasonally for snow maintenance,” Collier said.

In contrast, photo radar has been proven to be 40+% effective in reducing speeds in community safety and school zones, Collier says. “I have requested that the region manage this program as they already run a program on regional roads in our municipalities but also because the ticket payments and court challenges fall under the province administered by the region as well.
